Our soil is littered with plastic

Plastic pollution is not just a problem for the oceans but als for our soil. Plastic carelessly thrown away with our household compost litters and contaminates our soil in the meanwhile up to a huge extent although this problem is less visible than the littering of our oceans. If you put something into the household compost take care that no stickers or plastic parts like on the stipe of bananas persist on the fruit skin and plant materials. Empty your plastic bag at the bio-waste container (You may put the bag into the residual waste afterwards.) instead of throwing your compost together with the plastic bag into the bio-waste container - a mess still commited by many people. The household compost is used as a fertilizer on fields. Another problem which is not less pervasive in scope is the abraison of car tyres. Car tyres do not only consist of natural caoutchouc but are also made of plastics and smut/carbon black. Unfortunately they do often also contain pollution like heavy metals.

Interview with Greenpeace forest expert Oliver Salge on the political situation in Brazil

Has the situation of the indigenous people already deteriorated after Bolsonaro's election? Even very massive. … Those who steal land, beat up the indigenous people and do not shy away from killing, know that they have nothing to fear from the current government, which is behind them.

What consequences does the destruction of the forest have on the environment? In the worst case, the rainforest ecosystem collapses and becomes a savannah ecosystem, science says. At a certain point, when deforestation is at an advanced stage, the rainforest can no longer release as much water into the atmosphere as it does now. But that's important for the whole of Brazil. … Otherwise we can not win the fight against climate change.

It is by no means the case that Germany is not concerned. Several national parks and protected areas, which were set up in Brazil, co-financed the Federal Government together with other countries. Bolsonaro wants to destroy these achievements.

Brazil: Every four hours a person threatens to die: The Brazilian government is planning drastic cuts in the medical care of indigenous peoples. Human rights defenders are extremely worried about the impending disaster.
