The New Myths on Climate Change

The new myths on climate change do not deny any more that climate change happens and that it is a man made issue. However they are somewhat more subtle. They want to tell us: Just don´t be upset, the problem will solve by itself:
  • Prohibitions are illegal: Who would say this about the treaty against CFC (chlorfluorcarbons) to protect our ozone layer?
  • A singleton human can´t do anything: Tell that many people and have a great impact!
  • Other countries are worse/ have a greater impact: Who says we do not need a police because there are more crimes elsewhere? At least this is no good point to start. We need to do something on our own in order to demand change from others.
  • I do not like Greta Thunberg: That does not make it less correct what she says and what many scientists are saying
  • It costs so many jobs: In deed it creates 10 times more jobs than it costs. Technological evolution costs us much more jobs.
  • The wonder technology from the future will solve the problem: We are running out of time! Massively investing in new technologies would have been a good thing 30 years ago but now we need to deploy what we have - and that is sufficient to solve the crises.
A similar argument would be that the technical progress is so fast that we do not need to create incentives to switch to alternative energies: The big companies want to stay with their business model and they are doing everything to defend it! - and lobbying politics is part of their effort.

Good News for Climate Protection

The world’s rising reliance on fossil fuels may come to an end decades earlier than the most polluting companies predict. BloombergNEF reported that not only was renewable energy cheaper than building a new gas or coal plant, but it would soon be cheaper than using existing thermal plants too. The pace of progress has raised hope that the global groundswell of climate protest could spark fresh political will to accelerate the energy transition in time to keep global temperatures from rising to levels that could trigger a climate catastrophe.

Bolivia: stop torching forests for beef and soy!

Not only in Brazil but also in Bolivia rainforests are burnt to make place for beef and soy. Stop president Morale´s decreto supremo N° 3973 authorizing ‘controlled burns’. For the EU the Mercosur trade agreement is wholly unnecessary as possible gains are estimated to be in the range of 0,1% (see here). However it will not be possible to get to the better without a reduction in meat consumption. That is why we link some vegetarian recipes here: pt-br, de-at.

Costa Rica Forbids Styrofoam

Polystyrene is a carcinogenic type of plastic. When degrading or when it is ingested by maritime organisms it exhibits its toxic potential. In nature it lasts up to 500,000 or 1 Million years until it has fully degraded. Costa Rica has banned import and sale of styrofoam by June 2019. Use of polystyrene as packaging is unnecessary. Yoghurt pots can f.i. also be made of non-poisonous polyethylene by the use of state of the art molding techniques. Costa Rica is a pioneer in environmental protection. It wants to reduce the use of plastics and plans to become the first climate neutral nation until 2021.

debcheckroot v2.0 pre-release

debcheckroot-v1.99, the pre-release version of v2.0 is now available for testing. It is a program to verify your Debian Linux against rootkits also of unknown kind. Most likely it will become v2.0 without any significant changes. If so we will not notify for the final release in addition. debcheckroot v2.0 works with current versions of Debian and has many interesting new features: direct comparison, generation of sha256 lists, checking of symbolic links, user, group and mode. No external programs like gunzip or tar are required any more. The full functionality is integrated. By sucessively generating sha256-lists you may also verify installations based on multiple DVDs. Direct comparison or sha256 comparison is more secure than just comparing the md5 like with v1.0 but it requires a full unzip of all installation packages. Additionally it causes some false positives where configuration files are unpacked and later on automatically changed via installation scripts. Unpacking takes place in memory only.
