Europe, tax the top 1%

Tax the rich, not the poor! Thousands of people in yellow vests have been protesting for weeks on the streets to demand just that - not only in France, but also in Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands and the UK [1].

Here’s the plan: world-renowned economist Thomas Piketty, author of the book ‘Capital in the 21st Century’, and a group of social scientists have put together a manifesto with concrete, bold proposals to tax the richest companies and individuals in Europe. If we could persuade just two European governments to sign up to it, that would kickstart a radical transformation!

f.i. Apple only pays 0.005% of tax and also Amazon less than 1% while hard working people have to bear the brunt of taxation. The movement wants to establish a new European Assembly not being blocked by fiscal unanimity and being composed of members of national parliaments and of the European parliament. All of it would be possible without changing European treaties.

Dangerous Politics at the ECB

The General Accounting Office of the EU has no access to the European supervision of banks from the ECB which thus takes place without control. The situation was different when the supervision of banks was a national issue. Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank has said that there were too many banks in Europe. However small banks like saving banks and cooperative banks are the backbone of the German economy. The German success in exporting goods is attributed to one half to small and mid sized corporations which are direly in need of small banks to obtain credits (see for this article at DWN). Besides this the relatively cheap Euro makes it more easy for foreign investors to buy German corporations (DWN article).

Governments and corporations continue to recklessly expand fossil fuel infrastructure and agribusiness activities across the globe, despite the harm it does to the last pristine rainforests, indigenous peoples, and the climate. One of the most extreme examples is Brazil, whose right-wing extremist president Jair Bolsonaro has vowed to "open the Amazon for business."

Next week the European Parliament will vote on legislation to make previously-secret industry studies available to the public. The EU has f.i. allowed the use of glyphosphate for another five year basing on studies uprageously kept secret. This way it would be possible to prove the opposite of studies claiming that glyphosphate was save by independent scientists.
