Keep the Rio Tapajós Alive!

The Brazilian government is planning to build a megadam on the Rio Tapajós similar to Belo Monte on the Rio Xingu. This would destroy one of the most species-rich areas and displace many people who live alongside the river. The indigenous folk of the Mundurukú would lose its base of live. The climate bilance of the project is consistently negative not just because there will escape a lot of methane out of the large, flat, flooded area where the trunks of the trees rot. The project is overshadowed by a huge bribery and kickback scandal. If it would ever pay off in economimc terms then only for the building project organizer …

Put an End to Coal Power!

Coal is one of the dirtiest, most polluting energy sources; not just because of the CO2 emissions but also because of other pollutants and because of the destruction of whole landscapes including villages like in the Lausitz in Germany. An Austrian environmental group, Global 2000 points out that wild fish in local waters partially exposes a worrying high concentration of mercury; this even though there is not much coal power in Austria. Coal mining is not unproblematic either, as a report of the German magazine "die Zeit" actively describes from Columbia 'Ovidio Orozco becomes blind'.

Local environmental groups in Germany are demanding a quick exit towards coal power: You may sign the petition of RobinWood against coal mining and coal power in Germany or have a look at some of their protest actions.

Even in India where solar energy has become somewhat more cost-effective than coal power recently, the country plans to build new coal power plants since certain US-strategists have recommended the country an energy mix of this kind for its rising needs. Unfortunately they also want to build a new coal power plant next to a protective area and world heritage site in Rampal.

Something that needs to be clear to all of us is that the Paris climate agreement implies a soon exit from coal power if implemented!

Temperatures in April 2016 were the months highest since the start of the records (with 1.11° above pre-industrial levels) and so were temperatures in March, February and January 2016. The abnormally high global temperatures indicate an increased global warming by the time though temperature all-time records may decline by the end of El Niño for this year.
